Words, Signs and Vibes performance project
Performance: 5th May, 2003
Fiona Mulholland wrote this article after helping with the lighting on 'Moving On Up!!!', presented by Words, Signs and Vibes. This show was W,S & V first theatre perfomance and was presented on 5th May this year. It was a great success!
As a teenager looking for every opportunity to design lighting for amateur groups, I was very excited to get the chance to go down to Birmingham and lend a hand. As soon as I had seen one of the pieces I knew this group was very special - even unique.
One piece was about 2 groups going on holiday, one deaf and the other hearing. The best thing about this piece was that some people switched roles having hearing group people playing deaf members and deaf people playing the role of hearing characters. The valuable lesson learned from this piece is that it does not matter how good your hearing is when you are in a foreign country. The gestures used by the deaf group to communicate with the locals meant they were triumphant in finding the hotel.
After a long, hard yet very enjoyable weekend, I had been shown a completely different side of theatre to what I am used to. I would like to thank the young people and the Leaveners for such a great experience. Without the continued support of the Leaveners this worthwhile work would not be possible.
