Raising the Creative Spirit
Leaveners.org > Quaker Music Making

Each year the Leaveners offers a Choral and Chamber Music weekend which currently alternates between Charney Manor in Oxfordshire and Glenthorne in Cumbria. This weekend combines unaccompanied choral music, string chamber music, and a Sunday morning session bringing together the singers and string orchestra to combine their talents for an accompanied choral work.

In addition we offer Easter music schools for a chamber choir and orchestra to live and rehearse together preparing new works for performance. In 2000 we performed Dream me the Dust of my Creation. This production combined music, poetry, science and storytelling for a performance in the Chapman Theatre, Salford, Manchester.

In addition we offer singing workshops to Quaker meetings to bring together members, attenders, friends and family of all ages and abilities to sing songs reflecting our faith, history or just to have fun. Volunteers are encouraged to share their skills and techniques in leading workshops at an annual Singing Workshop Leaders day.

Since 1997 the Leaveners have been working on making music accessible to Quakers who may not be able to sight read music or have not passed grade 8 in music exams. This is reflected in the change of name from Quaker Festival Orchestra and Chorus (QFOC) to Quaker Music Making.
